Chapter Ten

“Two down and two to go,” said the red-haired woman seating herself behind the large mahogany table.

“You mean two down and three to go. You’re forgetting Eve Drum.”

“I’m not forgetting anyone. She’s going to be the easiest of all.”

One of the men raised his eyebrows and looked at her quizzically, “I hope you can back up your boast, Jobeena.”

Her green eyes flashed. “Are you saying I can’t?”

“No, not at all,” the man replied backing off, “but it seems to me that your job will be a lot more difficult from here on. I would bet Savoy and Borsalino are under heavy guard.”

“I expected that,” replied Jobeena. “Let us say I’ve taken steps which will insure my success.”

“But how?”

“As agreed, I won’t discuss my methods with you. After all, if I gave you a complete outline of my plans, what would you need me for?”

Don’t you trust us?” asked one of the men.

“Not at all.”

He smiled and said, “Could I freshen up your drink, Jobeena?”

“Yes. And more ice too, if you don’t mind.”

The man got up from the table and went to the bar on the other side of the room. He poured a glass of rare red wine and scotch and soda. He handed her the scotch and sat down saying, “Eve Drum has taken that massage-parlor girl to stay with her. There might be an angle there.”

“I’m already considering that,” she replied, sipping her drink.

The man who had been quiet through most of the discussion spoke up, “It has to be done quickly, before they make any more headway on the Terathon project.”

“Expect to read about the next murder within a few days.” She took an ice cube out of her glass and crushed it between her strong teeth.

Heavy drapes, partially open, hung before a sliding glass door leading to the garden. Suddenly the second man stood up, staring at something in the garden.

“What the hell is this?” he muttered angrily.

The other three men scrambled to their feet.

On the edge of the ten-foot high brick wall which surrounded the garden was a child—a small boy about the age of seven with a shock of bright blond hair.

“Calm down,” Jobeena said evenly. “It’s probably just a neighbor’s kid.”

“I bet he’s seen us,” said the first man with a nasty edge to his voice.”

“Get rid of him,” said the third man. “Scare him so badly he’ll never get up there again.”

“I’ll deal with it,” she replied. She went out the terrace door, walking towards the garden wall. Her face softened and became beautiful.

“Whatcha’ doing up there, fella?”

“Just watchin’.”

“You’re liable to get hurt. That’s an awfully high wall.”

“I won’t fall. I’ve been up here plenty of times.”

“My name’s Jobeena. What’s yours?”

“Scott.”

“Why aren’t you in school?”

“I’m too smart to go to school. They tutor me at home.” The boy’s bright eyes surveyed her. “You’re pretty.”

“Thank you, Scott. I bet you say that to all the girls.”

“No. Only the pretty ones.”

“Does your mother know you climb up there?”

“I don’t have a mother. Just a nurse and daddy.
